First Time Supervisor

Providing Training to First Time Supervisors Pays Off!

Although this is an exciting time for your employee, it can also be a scary one if they’ve never supervised before. As an employer you want to make sure you are providing them with the following to ensure a successful transition into their new role:

Additional support - Don’t stop meeting with them, check in with them more. Schedule regular one on ones and offer continuous support.

Identify the fundamentals of their new role - Before they can be effective in their new role, they may need new skills, training or resources. Help them learn these new skills early.

Set clear expectations, set goals  - This helps them prioritize and focus on key areas. You will discuss their progress during your one on ones and provide them with feedback.

Train them on employment law and internal employee policies - Ensure they understand basic employment law as well as established internal policies when handling issues such as poor performance and conflicts between employees.

Your trust  - Providing genuine trust to your new supervisor goes a long way in helping them grow as a leader. Genuine trust also equips them with a sense of empowerment and grows their self confidence as they lead their team and manage the difficult situations ahead of them.

Invest time in these areas and you will ensure your new supervisor is better prepared to succeed in their new role as a leader!

What additional support have you offered when promoting an employee to a first time supervisor role?
